KULIMA was founded in 1984, during the Civil War, together with a French NGO (Bioforce) in order to create better conditions and resettlement for refugees in areas in need. On May 3, 1990, KULIMA became recognized by the Ministry of Cooperation as a National NGO and in 1995 it was legally recognized by the Ministry of Justice , to officially operate throughout the whole country.
With 30 years of experience in integrated Socio - Economic development , as well as 20 years of training and supporting the Associative Movement of Mozambique (Movimento Associativo Moçambicano). Development projects have been implemented in all provinces of the country , covering more than 63 districts. In each province the population and local governments show much appreciation for KULIMA’s work due to clear and specific objectives and the goals achieved.
1974 -1984 (Before KULIMA was founded): During this period , Mr. Domenico Liuzzi, the founder and National Director of KULIMA was involved in a "revolutionary" project with the new government of Mozambique, conducting literacy programs, education programs for adults and integrated development programs for rural communities. From 1980 Mr. Luizzi together with Fr. Prosperino , started the process of creating green areas in Maputo and around the country.
1984 - 1993: During the Civil War, with KULIMA already established and funded mainly by the European Union and embassies, it began to show major process with the Emergency programs and Integrated rural development in the provinces of Inhambane, Sofala and Maputo. A steady contribution by the Mozambican Civil Society helped to promoted the Peace Agreement in Rome and to support the establishment of associative movement in Mozambique.
1994 - 1999: The Post Agreement for peace and liberal elections in the country led KULIMA to engaged in Rural Development programs. It increased its services in Social Promotion for Women and Children including projects in long distance adoptions, programs for street children and integration of women. In 1998 the first program to fight against HIV - AIDS was introduced with UNAIDS.
2000-2003: These years where committed to the Emergency program due to major flooding in the south part of the country, Maputo, Gaza and the Floods of the Zambezi River . KULIMA encouraged numerous of other national and international NGOs to co-operate in supporting the provinces that got hit by the floods. It aimed to get has many participants and donation to ensure that the program could come to meet every need. Main projects were constructing houses and social infrastructure in Maputo, Matola , Gaza, Sofala and Manica .
2001 - 2014: While still working on projects to improve the conditions of the people affected by the floods, KULIMA continues to work in rural areas to transform Emergency programs into development programs or in other words, making short-term goals become long-term activities against fighting poverty.
KULIMA’s activities have spread all around Mozambique and there are ongoing projects in all provinces except Niassa. It maintains a strong logistics and operational presence in each location by relying on their technical and management teams located in one of KULIMA’s many offices spread around the country.
