Kulima
Organism for the Socio-economic Development
- Mozambique -
NGO Profile
Kulima, is a Mozambican NGO functioning since 1984 on the Integrated Socio-economic Development. We are particularly devoted to the rural areas (root community) throughout the Mozambican territory. The term Kulima is very common in Bantu languages, meaning "to plough" or "to till." The term is directly related to Kulima's history, which has all along worked with rural communities whose daily income is provided by the land.
Our Personnel:
Our personnel (more than 70) are meticulously recruited on the base of trust, experience and training. We believe that the success of our development activities depend on our energised team (associated to their eligibility) who convene multifarious resources, enlivening the communities to a participatory development.
Our Development Activities:
Kulima has two areas of major intervention, as per the needs of the root communities:
Activities on the agricultural sector: Namely, on rural extension; support on production techniques, its improvement and evacuation of surplus, not mentioning the support to social activities, which means, civic and sanitary education; support to small scale enterprises and artisans, water supply, micro-credit. It is important that we perpetuate the inter-connection of these various sectors so to harmoniously promote the global growth.
Activities on social sector: Support and training of the Associative Movement in Mozambique, support to children in detrimental situation, support on the awareness of HIV/AIDS and finally, support to women through credit programs.

KULIMA, ITS HISTORY AND PUBLICATIONS:
Its History
Kulima was born in 1984 in connection with a French NGO (Bioforce), during the civil war, supporting the refugees by means of creating conditions for their permanent resettlement in proper areas.
On the 3rd of March 1990, it was registered by the Ministry of Co-operation as a national NGO.
In 1995 it was juridically recognised by the Justice Ministry, such to operate officially throughout the national territory.
Despite the recent constitution, the founding nucleus operated towards the integrate rural development in Maputo and in some provinces (namely, Maputo, inhambane and Sofala). This was on the 80s, and as from 1990, Kulima scattered into different provinces and getting a national dimension with awareness programmes on HIV/AIDS and opening branches throughout the country.
Publications:Complimentarily to its animation programmes, Kulima produced a number of publications aiming at fortifying the training dynamics attained by other technicians. We hereby highlight some of them:
Civic Education - Operator's Manual on the rural communities, 1994,
National Directory of NGOs, 1992, 1995, 1997,
Manuals for Community Education and Water Pumps Management, 1996-2000,
"The Mozambican Associative Movement Within a Democratic Governing," 1998,
Research on Disaster Prevention, PMA 1998-9,
"DIÁLOGO," Informative Newsletter About the NGOs from the Capital - 1998-2000,
NGOs Thematic Directory, 1999,
"Mangal, Ilusão ou Realidade," Studies on the Process of Mangal Protection in Mozambique, 1999,
Educational Bulletin (90.000 copies, every 2 months) for the Awareness of Students on the Prevention of HIV/AIDS, 1998-2001.
Our Methodology:
We consider the community as a key factor for activity. Whatsoever project developed by Kulima goes after a process of specific auscultation on the needs of the target groups. The communities
bring forth their concerns and we act as facilitators through the different phases of the process. In this way, we understand that there can be no sustainable community development unless a totally active participation of members of the community is registered, which are who will then guarantee the correctness of the programmes.
Our Experience:
We have catalogued 15 years of experience on the Integrated Socio-economic development, as well as 10 years supporting the Mozambican Associative Movement. We have implemented development projects in 7 provinces (Maputo, Gaza, Inhamabne, Manica, Sofala, Zambézia and Nampula) and in more than 30 districts. In each of the above mentioned provinces, the population and the local Government have asseverated their gratitude and esteem towards Kulima as per the conquered attainments.
Our Logistic:
The Headquarters are located in Maputo, and our branches are scattered on the (7) above mentioned provinces (co-ordinated by the headquarters). Each province is logistically equipped to assure its development activities.
Our Localisation:
Kulima's headquarters which are located on the country capital, facilitates the communication with all the provincial branches; however, it shoulders the regional participation dynamics in the Southern Africa and on the PALOP (Portuguese Speaking Countries) countries. Periodically, and depending on the endorsed commitments, we go about in co-ordination with the world social dynamics such as: Beijing (Women Promotion), Stocolma (Children Exploitation) and Porto Alegre (World Social Forum ), and much more ...
Our Engagement:
We are sure that a poor country like Mozambique possesses internal potential for its own development, and it is based on this potentialities that kulima aims at facilitating the sustainable development of the communities at medium and long term basis.
THE YEAR 2000 AT KULIMA
Development and Emergency Activities
To Mozambique as well as to Kulima, the year 2000 was a very special year. It was totally booked with activities and programmes due to the flood situation caused by the fortified downpour from February to March.
Still on this year, the emergency programmes post-flood doubled its activities on the field and demanded from us serious commitments on the execution in a short term, such to provide the specific succour to the population victimised.
Besides these immediate activities for the improvement of life condition of the population affected by the floods, Kulima keeps working on the field in order to digitise the emergency programmes into development programmes. Which is transforming the short term programmes under the emergency, into permanent programmes and as a means to combat the absolute poverty. Thus, Kulima's move into the new millennium obeys new challenges on the development programmes: we have vowed in creating conditions for an awareness of the people through the interchange with the trained leaders, who will then become active promoters of the development at local level.
In the year 2000, kulma's technical teams worked in emergency activities in 44 districts, collaborating with the local government as much as with the root community leaders, aiming at ameliorating the socio-economical condition of the rural communities and peri-urban.
Kulima's Staff:
Kulima is represented in 7 provinces within the country, with a permanent staff which sums up to 70 technicians, while to different programmes we usually employ more o less 250 technicians engaged on the execution of the specific activities. The emergency activities during the year 2000, contributed for the dramatic increase on the number of technicians.
Food for Work/ PMA
Kulima uses the food for work in a permanent basis since 1995. It is mainly on the poorest areas for the sake of the peasants' engagement on the recovery of their infrastructures: roads, drainage ditches, environmental cleaning. The bottom line, is the collaboration on the emergency actions being carried out in Mozambique.
THE YEAR 2000 AT KULIMA:
Training Activities and Support to the Associative Movement
Since 1999 Kulima took on as the main objective, the support to the Mozambican Associative Movement, gathering conditions to create infrastructures of support to the growth and the consolidation of such movement.
Hence, Kulima supported or created:
A Services Centre,
The Publication of Directories
Informative Newsletters at National Level,
The Creation of National Forums,
National and Regional Workshops,
Monographs and Researches,
Partnership with Forums from the Southern Africa and PALOP.
As per the dynamic nature of the society, kulima is constantly in a process of adaptation to new methods to face the integrated development, taking into consideration the socio-political and economical changes in the country.
Thus, through kulima, the community is updated on the various areas of sociability. Due to this reason, and mainly on the urban and semi-urban areas, Kulima has been developing programmes of social promotion as a benefit to poor children (the Ntwanano project), women promotion as well as the promotion of the unemployed (Social Attendance Centres).
Bursary:
Besides this, kulima supports scholastic activities of Mozambican youngsters with limited resources. Thus, since 1995 onwards, almost 15 university youngsters have been supported with school fees and various expenses related to their pursuit at the Eduardo Mondlane University, in Maputo. As from the year 2000, Kulima in partnership with Cesvitem-Italy, are as well promoting scholarships for graduation in Italy.
It is pellucid through the chart bellow, how Kulima conducts an integrated action among the rural communities. The emergency aspect, which in the year 2000 almost reached 50% of the activities, reflects knowledge, commitments and the operative presence on the areas of extreme delicacy. See Chart Bellow:
Percentage on the Allocation of Funds (entrance), per Area of Intervention.
In the year 2000, Kulima was engaged o both, rural development programmes and on the emergency, throughout the national territory. See Chart bellow:
